NYC Environmental Issues Fact Sheet

  • Public & Private buses in NYC provide public transport to the same Riding Public, evidenced by NYC Policy providing BUS LANES to ALL BUSES equally. ALL Buses, public/private, are part of the solution, not the problem.
  • Privately-owned buses mitigate congestion, create cleaner air with new technology and greatly reduced emissions, providing public benefits. During the last 15 years, technology has advanced substantially, providing CLEAN emissions.
  • The Congestion Pricing Program in NYC is designed to Mitigate Congestion; Private & Public Buses in scheduled service are Exempt from Congestion Pricing fees, on par with Transit Services.
  • Motorcoaches are the most energy efficient and environmentally responsible mode of transportation in North America.
  • Currently NYC Citizens Air Complaint Program imposes a 3 minute (1 minute in a school zone) idling restriction on Private buses only.
  • For SAFETY buses need to maintain power for their operating systems and to generate heat in the winter and a/c in the summer. These basic functions often take more than 3 minutes forcing a driver to choose between protecting passengers or complying with current idling law.
  • Private Buses operating in should receive a variance from the 3-minute rule to permit SAFE operations for Passengers, on par with Transit Services.
  • Air Quality in NYC is exacerbated by private autos and excessive truck deliveries to residents and workers ordering online – Not People- Passengers – the Riding Public using buses.
